Chrome is evolving. Once defined by high-shine, mirror-like finishes, it is now taking on a softer, more nuanced form. The new iteration is sheer, diffused and light-reflecting, designed to enhance rather than dominate. It first rose to popularity in the early 2020s, when Hailey Bieber’s glazed doughnut manicure, created by celebrity nail artist Zola Ganzorigt, introduced a more translucent, skin-like approach to chrome, one that felt polished but understated.
Since then, the finish has continued to shift. Artists such as Michelle Humphrey, Tom Bachik and Julie Kandalec have reinterpreted it through pearlescent layers, soft gradients and barely-there tones, moving chrome further away from high-impact shine and into something more wearable. The effect sits closer to the natural nail, creating a look that feels luminous and quietly refined.
Part of its appeal lies in how it can be achieved. In salons, ultra-fine chrome powders are buffed into gel top coats for a smooth, long-wearing finish that can last up to two to three weeks. At home, similar results can be created through layering sheer polishes, pearlescent lacquers or glossed top coats, offering a softer, more temporary version. The finish works particularly well on almond, oval or softly rounded shapes, where light can move fluidly across the nail.
What defines this trend is its versatility. It can be pearly, iridescent or softly tinted, adapting across tones while maintaining a sense of ease. From glazed, barely-there finishes to softly diffused gradients, the look continues to evolve, reinterpreted by artists and adapted across different styles. Below, a closer look at how soft chrome is being worn now, alongside the formulas bringing it to life.
