Vacations today are carefully curated experiences with moodboards, itineraries, coordinated wardrobes, and now, increasingly, beauty rituals to match. The countdown doesn’t begin when the bags are packed, but weeks earlier, when you start preparing yourself to arrive looking and feeling your best. Travel prep is not just about sorting visas or SPF anymore. It’s about scheduling hydrating facials, booking IV drips, micro-dosing tweakments, and resetting sleep and skincare rhythms. Beauty prep has become part of the itinerary.
Well, that’s what prejuvenation is! “Travel often exposes skin to harsh conditions, such as dry airplane air, UV radiation, pollution, and extreme weather. Prejuvenation treatments strengthen the skin barrier, making it more resilient to these stressors. By investing in prejuvenation before your holiday, you ensure your skin is prepared to handle the rigours of travel while maintaining a radiant, youthful appearance,” explains Dr Azza Salih, senior dermatologist at Kaya Clinic, Dubai.
Think of it as a proactive, preventative approach to skincare and wellness that’s designed to help you glow before your vacation days. It’s the antithesis of post-holiday repair. When your destination is a beach or a high-altitude retreat, the shift in climate can be especially demanding on your skin. Between the sun exposure, dehydration from flying, late nights, salty air, and even time zone shifts, your skin goes through a lot.
Rooted in gentle, non-invasive treatments and backed by science, prejuvenation skincare treatments are gaining popularity in clinics and wellness lounges. It blends dermal discipline with a dose of indulgence—think antioxidant IV drips, microcurrent facials, and barrier-boosting skincare, all timed weeks before your departure. “It’s about doing everything possible for maintaining youthful-looking skin by combining good skincare practices with preventative non-surgical treatments consistently, and lifestyle (including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep),” Dr Salih adds.
Even without a full clinic visit, foundational skincare can still go a long way. “Vitamin C serum is an excellent starting point,” says Dr. Dina, Aesthetic Expert at Skin Laundry, UAE. “It provides antioxidant protection, especially when layered under SPF, and helps combat oxidative stress caused by UV exposure. Pair that with a hydrating cleanser, B5 moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen for an easy, effective daily routine.”
If you're considering prejuvenation treatments before your trip, there are plenty of easy, low-maintenance options available—no need for intense peels or downtime-heavy lasers.“One can go for hydrating facials and HA boosters to plump and refresh the skin, followed by peels to exfoliate and brighten. Treatments like microneedling, radiofrequency, and lasers boost collagen and improve texture, while LED therapy calms and heals. Salmon DNA injections deeply rejuvenate, and a touch of Botox or filler smooths lines and restores volume,” suggests Dr Salih.
For those new to prejuvenation, timing is everything. “We can safely do facials and lasers for skin rejuvenation and hydration injectables 2 to 3 days before travel time. But it is advisable to
avoid any procedures on sun-exposed areas that lead to skin exfoliation or build-up of skin flakes in the week leading up to your trip,” she advises. This gives your skin time to respond to any active treatments and avoids last-minute sensitivity.
While prejuvenation is all about arriving at your destination looking and feeling your best, it’s important to remember that not all beauty treatments are ideal before travel. Some can leave your skin more vulnerable to the very stressors. “Avoid Dermapen, radiofrequency, microneedling, or fractional laser right before travel, especially if you’ll be in the sun,” cautions Dr. Dina. “These treatments can leave the skin temporarily vulnerable, and sun exposure may lead to hyperpigmentation.” She also advises against any procedures if the skin is sunburned or inflamed. The safest approach is to wait until your skin has completely recovered. The golden rule? If a treatment involves healing, redness, or peeling, save it for after you return.
For anyone short on time, a ‘prejuvenation-lite’ routine can still go a long way, and many of these core principles are accessible at home. According to the experts, here’s what to do:
