Tenderness, peace and attunement– when was the last time you felt connected with that force within you? It’s true that our minds are what separate us from those metal machines. Yet, there’s another inimitable component. It’s magnificent, unique and in need of our attention. Our soul is the spark that ignites all passions and desires. It’s the unseen magic that ties us together.

As Ramadan approaches, many prepare themselves for a month of spiritual growth and reflection. It reminds us of the importance of nurturing both the body and soul in a holistic cycle towards inner peace. Just like we feed our bodies, we can all learn simple ways we can foster our spiritual self. Here’s just a few of them:

Practice Mindfulness

It’s in those moments of silence, when things slow down and our minds finally rest, that we are able to reflect inwards and reconnect with ourselves. Mindfulness is the practice of being in the present– remembering where and who we are. It allows us to reflect back onto our values, reminding us of what truly matters. It quiets down the noise and brings forward our inner spirits.

Express Gratitude

Let’s think: What are three things you are grateful for today? It could be something small and simple, like your morning hot drink. It could be abstract and existential, such as the ability to learn and grow. Whatever you’re appreciating today and tomorrow, write it down. And if it’s someone you care about, share with them your thoughts. Expressing gratitude is an undeniable way to shift your perspective positively, uplifting your spirits and cultivating your well-being.

Connect with Nature

Nature can be filled with many different sounds. Yet, it can also somehow be quieter than the heavy silence of everyday hustle and fatigue. When your soul is weighed down, when you start losing focus, reconnect with the beauty and tranquility of nature. Even a simple walk outdoors can help with clearing your mind and rejuvenating your inner peace.

Appreciate Creativity

There’s no better gateway for self-expression than through creativity. Creativity taps into our authenticity and emotional rawness. It challenges the rigid limits of reality and creates a haven to explore our inner worlds. Whether it’s through art, literature, music or even comedy, find your space and let loose.

Cultivate Self-Compassion

A punctured cup can never be full. A nurtured soul can protect us from stressors of the external world. However, we must also first fortify it from the internalized critics that chip away at our ability to find inner harmony. Self-compassion is not simply reciting positive affirmations, it is the foundational attitude with which you can care for your soul through intentional reflection and self-forgiveness.
