If you thought non-invasive treatments were limited to facial enhancements, think again. Body contouring treatments are steadily finding their footing in the aesthetics space too – promising fat reduction, smoother skin and improved firmness, all without needles, surgery or downtime.

“Body contouring is frequently the final step in a significant health journey. When a patient has put in the work with diet and exercise but has stubborn pockets of metabolic waste, non-invasive contouring provides the psychological closure to their transformation, finally aligning their physical form with their disciplined lifestyle,” says Dr Srishti Mohapatra, Aesthetic Physician & Consultant Internal Medicine, The Wellness Co. It’s within this context that Onda Therapy enters the conversation.

At its core, Onda Therapy is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that uses microwave technology to target fat cells beneath the skin. Unlike more familiar modalities like radiofrequency or ultrasound, it operates at a specific frequency (2.45 GHz) designed to selectively act on adipose tissue – the layer responsible for stubborn fat deposits. “Onda Therapy, developed by DEKA, represents a shift in non-invasive body contouring by utilising specific high-frequency microwave fields known as Coolwaves™, which are unlike traditional modalities that rely on electrical resistance or sound waves,” adds board-certified dermatologist, Dr Kiran Sethi, founder of Isya Aesthetics and Active Longevity, Delhi.

The science, while complex, translates into something fairly straightforward. “The coolwaves penetrate through the upper layers of the skin without overheating or damaging them, targeting the deeper subcutaneous fat layer where they are most effective. Unlike traditional radiofrequency treatments that mainly act on the surface, this works deeper, enhancing metabolism within fat tissue and delivering more targeted fat reduction,” explains Dr Sevilia Mirzoeva of Zieda’s Aesthetics Clinic, Dubai.

The body-contouring market is crowded, with treatments ranging from cryolipolysis (fat freezing) to laser-based devices and radiofrequency systems. “Traditional energy-based devices scatter energy broadly. Onda’s Coolwaves penetrate at a specific depth, acting precisely on fat and fibrous septae – the structural bands responsible for cellulite - while a built-in cooling system protects the skin throughout,” says Dr Narjesene Rasheed, Head of Slimming & Wellness at Kaya Wellness & Longevity clinic, UAE.

There’s also the added benefit of cellulite reduction. “Onda combines two powerful effects - fat reduction (lipolysis), which breaks down fat cells, and skin tightening, by stimulating collagen and improving circulation. This dual action allows the treatment to enhance both body contour and skin quality at the same time,” says Dr Sevilia. The treatment is best suited for those looking to address body contouring, cellulite reduction, skin tightening, improved tone and texture, and localised fat deposits.

There’s also the growing fatigue around aggressive procedures. Surgical interventions like liposuction remain effective, but they come with downtime, risk and a level of commitment many are no longer willing to make. Non-invasive treatments, by contrast, promise incremental improvement without disruption to daily life.

Onda treatment typically involves three to four sessions, spaced about four weeks apart. Most may see an average reduction of over 3 centimetres in abdominal circumference after completing a full cycle. “Initial changes can be visible within 30 days, but the most significant results tend to appear between two to three months, as the body completes the metabolic clearance of fat debris,” adds Dr Kiran.

Post-treatment, you might experience slight redness or warmth, but these effects tend to subside quickly. “High hydration (2 litres of water daily) is required for several days post-treatment to facilitate the lymphatic drainage of liberated lipids,” Dr Kiran adds. But, the biggest selling point? There is no downtime. “You can achieve visible results without surgery or stress, which makes them an increasingly attractive option,” answers Dr Sevilia.

However, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Different areas respond differently depending on fat density and tissue composition. High-response zones include the abdomen, flanks (love handles), double chin and outer thighs, where results tend to be more consistent. Lower-response areas – such as regions with very fibrous fat or minimal subcutaneous depth, like the lower shins or bony parts of the upper back may show less dramatic fat reduction, though some degree of skin tightening can still be achieved.

Like most aesthetic treatments, the value of Onda Therapy ultimately depends on what you’re looking for. “Onda is a highly effective tool for patients with a BMI under 30 who have localised, stubborn fat deposits or mild-to-moderate skin laxity. It is not a replacement for weight loss or a solution for morbid obesity. Its primary value lies in its ability to target fat more deeply and selectively than radiofrequency, with a significantly higher comfort profile than cryolipolysis (fat freezing). For individuals seeking body contouring without the risks of invasive surgery, it remains a strong clinical recommendation,” says Dr Kiran

.Onda Therapy is unlikely to be the last innovation in non-invasive body contouring. If anything, it signals where the industry is headed – towards treatments that are more targeted and precise. “We are seeing professionals in their late 20s and 30s who view these treatments not as quick fixes, but as metabolic maintenance. They aren’t addressing a one-time concern; they’re using these technologies as performance tools to supplement their fitness regimes. It has shifted from a vanity purchase to a longevity investment,” says Dr Srishti.

There’s a growing shift towards treatments that work with the body rather than against it - no scars, no surgery, just gradual, lasting change that fits seamlessly into a full life. For now, Onda sits at this interesting intersection.
