On the autumn/winter 2026 runways, Jonathan Anderson at Dior sent out jeans embellished with a scallop pattern resembling decorative curtain swags. A constant in this embellished denim narrative is Stella McCartney, known for its jazzy approach – this time closing with a pair studded with colourful crystals for the finale look.
Of course, not all embellished jeans are created equal, and part of their current resonance comes from the sheer variety available. There are pieces that lean heavily into maximalism – dense with crystals, sequins, or studs – and others that take a more understated approach, with delicate embroidery or tonal detailing. There’s also an undercurrent of sustainability shaping this trend. Upcycling, in particular, has found a natural home in embellished denim. Reworking existing jeans with embroidery, patchwork, or appliqué not only extends their lifespan but also adds a layer of uniqueness.
Designers have been setting the stage for this sparkle-soaked denim era for a while now. What’s interesting is how this trend navigates the line between nostalgia and novelty. Embellished denim isn’t entirely new; it evokes the early 2000s, when jeans were adorned with rhinestones or decorative stitching. The ’90s saw a wave of couture-level rhinestone denim, with Jean Paul Gaultier notably sending out heavily embellished versions across seasons. Madonna, in Tom Ford for Gucci, wore multi-stoned purple jeans at the 1999 Grammy Awards, while Britney Spears performed in her signature bedazzled denims during her 2001 Dream Within a Dream Tour.
Embellished jeans retain denim’s innate cool factor while injecting a touch of glamour. They may not be destined for black-tie dress codes or weddings, but they’re perfect for chic dinners, lively parties, and just about everything in between. If the sparkle feels like a bit much, pair them with a relaxed tee or a minimalist tank, then ground the look with simple trainers. A blazer-and-jeans combination is tried-and-tested for a reason. Add a simple bandeau top underneath to keep the ensemble pared-back yet sexy – and if you’re feeling bold, don’t shy away from leaning into the sparkle with a few extra-shine accents.
