Standing at the entrance of Al Quoz, I realised that despite living in Dubai for 22 years, it was only my second time here. The moment I walked in, it felt like I was travelling, not because Dubai isn’t touristy enough, but the place gives you that distinct feeling of stepping out of your country or home. It hit me instantly. People were cruising around, shops buzzing and tourists asking for directions.

Al Quoz has never tried to impress – and that, perhaps, is precisely its power. Once a purely industrial pocket of Dubai, it has evolved into the city’s most compelling creative quarter. Here, culture does not arrive fully formed; it is built slowly, deliberately, and often behind unmarked doors.

Today, this place reflects a broader evolution in Dubai’s creative and social landscape. Cafes are conceived as cultural meeting points rather than commercial stops and art studios double up as spaces for open dialogues. Many of the concepts here are founder-led, intentionally small and deeply personal –spaces designed less for mass appeal and more for meaningful exchange.

A pivotal moment arrived in 2008 with the establishment of Alserkal Avenue, which expanded significantly in 2015 and helped anchor Al Quoz as a creative hub.. Galleries, performance spaces and concept venues did more than attracting footfall, they fostered the spirit of community. Culture arrived first; everything else followed.

What distinguishes Al Quoz lies in its spirit, not its location. It acts as a magnet for those who want to build their dreams patiently, far from conventional formulas of success, slowly becoming a living laboratory for Dubai’s next cultural chapter. As public tastes mature, the creative hub answers a growing yearning for authenticity. Here, culture thrives behind unassuming façades, seamlessly woven into the city’s evolving identity.

Suzi Fadel Nassif established Al Mezzanine in Al Quoz as an art space dedicated to supporting creators. A contemporary, multi-award-winning artist, Nassif is self-taught. She carved her creative path through a journey that began amid Lebanon’s challenges before settling in Dubai over two decades ago. Influenced by Salvador Dali’s world, she refined her artistic vision through her choice of colors, textures and details, gravitating towards abstract impressionism and surrealism. She has pioneered a unique style known as "Suzism”, through which she brings silent emotions to life. Her paintings explore human interconnectedness, cultural diversity and emotional depth. The eyes are a powerful focal point in her portraits. “I chose Al Quoz because it is where creativity meets raw energy. It brings together artists, makers and visionaries, encouraging experimentation and dialogue,” Nassif says. “I wanted my practice to grow in a space that reflects authenticity, freedom and a continuous process of becoming.”

Rumana Nazim embodies a unique model of leadership that seamlessly connects legal expertise with creative vision. Through her concept space, The Edit in Alserkal Avenue, she has successfully cultivated an innovative environment that transcends traditional retail to promote a culture of mindful consumption. The space integrates fashion, jewellery and wellness within a setting that encourages visitors to slow down and engage meaningfully with their surroundings. Nazim’s work is rooted in weaving contemporary art into everyday life and championing regional talent. Her impact extends beyond entrepreneurship into the social sphere through LivWell, a community-led platform she cofounded to empower women and foster vital conversations around health, culture and modern living. Committed to building purposeful communities and supporting female-led brands, she believes in creating balanced environments where the boundaries between art, fashion and wellbeing dissolve. The district’s authenticity and honesty were what originally drew Nazim to the area. Reflecting on this choice, she notes, “You come to Al Quoz because you are serious about what you are building. I wanted to be an active part of Alserkal Avenue’s evolution rather than just a visitor.” She adds, "I believe in the ability of The Edit to offer a considered commercial model that grows in harmony with the surrounding galleries and studios.”

Founders Lama Jouni and Ruby Kreidieh have intentionally chosen Al Quoz for their studio Outline’s strategic accessibility. “Our goal is to redefine the manufacturing industry, which is often out of reach and impractical for designers,” they stated. “The cultural hub’s central location provides an ideal environment and allows us to build a more connected and efficient ecosystem”. She also leads Outline, contributing to the development of the region’s fashion manufacturing infrastructure and supporting designers through strategic consultancy and hands-on guidance to empower local creativity. Asma Laraiedh is a UAE-based product designer and ceramicist who founded her label, Baya By Asma, in 2016. Driven by a desire to engage with hands-on creativity, she decided to dedicate herself full-time to the art of pottery. Laraiedh believes this craft offers a sanctuary for stillness and contemplation, where the act of shaping clay becomes a daily ritual that eases life’s stress and restores inner balance. Her work fosters a direct sensory connection between the individual and the medium, enhancing a sense of tranquillity and presence in the moment. Beyond its therapeutic value, ceramics serve as a sustainable vocation, allowing the artist to transform passion into a professional practice that balances creative expression with independence. Her approach is a fusion of art, functionality and production. Through her brand, she seeks to diffuse the art of ceramics and share the profound sensation these materials evoke. Reflecting on her choice of Al Quoz, she says, “I was drawn to the hidden art spaces within the industrial landscape, where the atmosphere feels raw and real. It is a remarkable hub that connects artists and galleries.”

Beirut-born Lynn Hazim is the founder of Middle Child, a unique space in Alserkal Avenue that brings together a restaurant, a gourmet grocer and a cookbook shop. On choosing this location, Hazim shares, “I was drawn to it because it doesn’t feel manufactured. I wanted Middle Child to be part of a destination where people come to discover, linger and engage with culture. The hub’s creative energy mirrors the curiosity and openness I wanted the restaurant to embody.” She adds, “Middle Child was always meant to be a space for connection, and I felt this place was the perfect ecosystem for it.” Drawing on her Lebanese heritage, global travels and years of cooking and writing, she blends elevated comfort food with curated pantry staples, rooted in the concept of meaningful dining. Since its opening, the restaurant has quickly become a neighbourhood favourite and was recognised as One To Watch by MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Efie Gallery

Ghanaian founders Valentina, Kobi and Kwame Mintah established Efie Gallery in Alserkal Avenue as a family-led initiative that transcends commercial boundaries to offer an intellectual project rooted in the values of hospitality and cultural stewardship. The gallery embodies the concept of efie, meaning "home", as a space that unites artists and audiences within an environment defined by care, rigour and creativity. Together, the siblings have developed a globally resonant programme representing leading artists from Africa and the diaspora, such as El Anatsui and Aïda Muluneh. Their curatorial direction centres on challenging reductive narratives and highlighting historical consciousness through sculptural and textile works that explore themes of migration and memory, placing African creativity within an interconnected global historical context. They exemplify a model of cultural responsibility that merges scholarly rigour with warmth, aiming to empower African artists on a global stage and transform galleries into living spaces for intellectual exchange. The founders note that Al Quoz’s industrial warehouses provided flexible infrastructure and vast spaces that surpass the constraints of traditional galleries, allowing for the exhibition of large-scale installations and textile works. Alserkal Avenue was specifically chosen as it is a rigorous intellectual ecosystem that supports dialogue and research, fulfilling the gallery’s vision.

Charicycles & Kave

Rania Kana’an, cofounder and managing director of Charicycles & Kave, is a leading advocate of social impact entrepreneurship. Launched in 2014 as a homegrown sustainable brand rooted in upcycling, Charicycles paved the way for the establishment of Kave at Alserkal Avenue in 2019. Kave serves as a multidisciplinary community space that celebrates ancestral roots and creativity, aiming to foster mindful consumption. Kana’an’s vision is to create a kinder world by empowering individuals and small businesses and bridge the gap between modern sustainability and the wisdom of our ancestors to serve both the community and environment. She believes that life always leads to what is best, and this sense of "flow" is exactly what built Kave. "Our story began with my sister Zaina when we set up Charicycles. We were curious about Alserkal Avenue even then, but we dismissed the idea, thinking it was financially out of reach,” she reflects. “Years later, as we were preparing to leave the country because it was challenging to sustain the business, we received an invitation from the Alserkal team to activate one of their warehouses." Rania continues, “Despite our hesitation, the universe kept nudging us towards a 'yes’. With almost no budget, what started as a temporary pop-up transformed into a permanent space built on our brand’s ethos: living a kinder life and embracing everyone – from makers to consumers – who share the same purpose.”

Shimis

Simona Stanton was born and raised in Prague before she moved to Dubai at the age of 21 and completed her degree in psychology. It was during this time that she fell in love with yoga. After undergoing intensive training, she realised that she had a profound desire to share this knowledge and passion with others. At the time, she couldn’t find a yoga studio in Dubai that truly combined mindful practice with a strong athletic element. This gap inspired her to establish Shimis at the cultural hub. “I chose Alserkal Avenue to set up my business because the essence of Shimis is centered on community. Since this same philosophy represents Alserkal’s heart, I knew from the very beginning it was the perfect fit,” she says. Stanton created a unique style of yoga that blends infrared heating techniques with training in a dark room featuring a custom lighting system and loud music. She has, since, expanded her offerings to include Yin Yoga, deep stretching, prenatal classes, and Warm Barre.
