Growing up in a Muslim household, there was an unspoken ritual that framed every departure: my mother, an Ayat from the Quran already on her lips, gently blown over me before I stepped out into the world. It was so instinctive, so woven into daily life, that I never thought to name it (let alone miss it). It was only after I grew older, moved countries, and began navigating life on my own that I realised what had been left behind. It was not the words exactly, but the quiet sense of spiritual protection they carried. Faith, I’ve learned, doesn’t always travel with you in the same form. At some point, you’re asked to find it independently, and that journey, deeply personal and ever-changing, looks different for everyone.

As we start yet another month of Ramadan, people arrive at the holy month carrying vastly different burdens. Dwindling faith, quiet pain, unanswered worries and private battles. Yet there is one emotion that seems to unify them all, hope. It matters little where you stand on the spectrum of belief, how strong or fragile your faith feels, or how imperfect your practice may be. What matters is showing up and trying. Ramadan has a way of meeting people exactly where they are. Through restraint not just from food but from excess, noise and indulgence, it becomes a month that cleanses far more than the body. It clears space. And in that space, faith has a way of finding you again.

In a region where Ramadan is deeply rooted yet shaped by the coming together of many cultures, faith has always been something shared, interpreted, and rewoven across generations. Today, a younger generation carries forward rituals inherited from those before them, while also creating new ones that feel personal and emotionally connected to the month. As a fashion journalist who shares this faith, I observe these shifts from close range. I see what is created, what is consumed, and often the weight of consumerism that accompanies it. Yet within certain objects, the connection feels sincere and seamless. Jewellery featuring Islamic calligraphy and symbolism holds a distinctly talismanic quality. It carries history, tradition, culture, and heritage in forms that feel intimate and enduring. Increasingly, brands are translating these elements through a modern design language that remains deeply moving. And so, when I find myself missing the small traditions of home, I hold my Ayat Ul Kursi pendant a little closer, a quiet reminder of faith made tangible.

“As a jewellery designer, I have always believed that jewellery should carry meaning. It should evoke emotion beyond simply being a beautiful object made of precious metal. Today, storytelling, culture and craftsmanship are essential to a brand’s design language, and I am grateful to see these values translate so seamlessly into the journeys of many designers, including my own,” said Nilofar Jaques, founder of Anayah Jewellery.

Whether you are drawn to jewellery inscribed with verses from the Quran or prefer more abstract symbols that quietly echo the spirit of the month, there is meaning to be found in both. Motifs such as the setting sun, the crescent moon or the palm tree carry their own resonance, offering subtle reflections of renewal, patience and faith. With this in mind, we have curated a selection of brands that approach these elements with care and intention, striking a thoughtful balance between reverence and contemporary design. Each piece honours the sanctity of its inspiration while remaining current, conversational and rooted in a shared sense of spirituality.
