It might be January still, but we all can't wait for May. Specifically, the first Monday in May, when Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour will co-chair the 2025 Met Gala, alongside honorary chair LeBron James.
On 9 October, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibit will feature garments, paintings, photographs, and more—all exploring the indelible style of Black men in the context of dandyism, from the 18th-century through present day. As such, the 2025 chairs could not be more fitting.
Domingo attended his first Met Gala in 2024, following an awards season that saw the actor’s bold, majestic style command red carpets and anoint him one of the best dressed men in Hollywood. Hamilton, a regular attendee since 2015, has transformed the once fashion-devoid Formula 1 paddocks into hotbeds of inspiration, arriving to the track in deftly styled looks from houses that often host him at their fashion shows (in the front row, of course). A$AP Rocky, meanwhile, finds himself lensed by street style photographers almost daily—his singular, distinct aesthetic surely on mood boards across the globe. This year will mark Williams’s sixth time at the Met Gala and second as co-chair; he previously assumed the role in 2017 for “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.” A boundless arbiter of fashion during his decades-long career in music, that influence continues today through Williams’s role as creative director of Louis Vuitton Men’s. Honorary chair James will be attending his first Met Gala, bringing with him an incomparable athletic legacy and an embrace of style that has helped fuel today’s unprecedented crossover between fashion and sports.
Chaired by Wintour since 1995, the Met Gala returns to New York City on 5 May. The dress code will be announced sometime soon, and “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” will be on view 6 May through 26 October 2025. Mark your calendars.
